The Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI) is the primary membership organization for those interested in the philosophy, science, application, and teaching of behavior analysis. The annual ABAI Autism provides a fantastic opportunity for researchers, practitioners, and students alike to showcase their latest research and findings in the area of autism. Guest speakers also present on areas of autism research and service delivery, including assessment, intervention, education, and advocacy. 2022 Conferences:

Teachers and Educators Conference on Behavior Disorders (TECBD)

The annual Teacher Educators for Children with Behavior Disorders (TECBD) conference is one the BEAMS scholars attend together away from San Diego State campus and courses. This is a space for professional development and is the premier educational research conference for teacher educators working with children and youth with severe behavioral disorders. This conference is not just for researchers, but a space for teachers, school psychologists, special educators, juvenile justice employees amongst others to come together and collaborate, thus bringing many backgrounds together. This conference works with both clinical and communical systems and was established in Arizona in 1976 by Dr. Robert B. Rutherford. TECBD began it's mission long before support for students with severe behaviors was the norm. It continues to be a leader for showcasing the very best that our field has to offer.

The TECBD 2021 Keynote speaker was Dr. Jeffrey Sprague, professor of special education and director of the University of Oregon Institute on Violence and Destructive Behavior. Jeffrey Sprague is an academic expert in school violence, school safety, positive behavior interventions and supports, multi-tiered support systems, alternative education, and juvenile delinquency prevention and treatment. Dr. Sprague's presentation topic was "A Tale of Three Tiers: Lessons learned about Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports and What We Need to Know Next". The session highlighted ideas from research, including what is known (and not known) about PBIS effectiveness, promising practices and outcomes in reducing exclusionary discipline practices, and research on teacher wellbeing as a variable in understanding barriers to implementation of evidence-based practices.

2020 Conference:

Council for Exceptional Children (CEC)

February 5-8, 2020

Portland, Oregon

The Council for Exceptional Children provides support, continuing education and resources for teachers and families of students in special and gifted education programs. As the recognized leader for special education professional standards, CEC develops standards, ethics and practices and guidelines to ensure that individuals with exceptionalities have access to well-prepared, career-oriented special educators.  CEC also establishes high expectations for implementing evidence-based instructional approaches that address the unique learning needs of exceptional children and youth.
