Virtual Summer Academy:
Public Service Announcement Project
After the unexpected shift to virtual learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our UB/HCOP Summer Academy offered a completely virtual summer program to our students. One of the projects they completed during the experience was a series of Public Service Announcements (PSAs) related to education, healthcare, the economy, the environment, and society in general. Students completed several versions of their PSAs, with the opportunity to improve and learn new skills with each draft. Please enjoy their final products.
Poem written by "The Silver Knights:"
You want us to know that you care about our mental health
You want us to succeed
You want us to live in the moment
You want us to give it all we got
But we are tired.
We are tired of having to deal with stress, anxiety, and depression.
We are tired of having to live up to your expectations.
Our eyes hurt from looking at our screens for so long,
You overestimate our abilities to balance work, home, and school.
Our rooms are no longer our sanctuaries but jails.
Jails that are cells embedded with stress and helplessness.
Our grades are dropping and we’re scared.
It’s not that we were lazy and aren’t working up to our “full potential”,
We’ve simply reached our limit,
were burning out quickly like a dying candle and just want to be understood.
With each coming day feeling less inspired
Sitting in front of a screen 6 hours a day
With our mental health in a sharp decay
“Stay motivated” is all they say
That’s hard when my grade never rises to an A
You’ll never know what's behind that screen of a teen
With many dark things better left unseen
Left feeling like programmed machines
Our daily lives, just repetitive routines
Teachers can’t go a day without having tech spasms
And these weekly quizzes are a blast! (Sarcasm)
They say these are hard times
Then want us to write a thousand lines
Expect all the stars to align
And if you miss something…
Make it up in your own time!
I get it, I really do
But some of us have lives outside of school too
But lately its been feeling like that's not true
I just want you to see things from our point of view
November 2020 Saturday Session
Contemporary art pieces made by students through spokenword/poetry/dance/ art drawing/art painting and online web art. The goal of this session was to give students examples of Fibonacci’s number and the Fibonacci spiral in art. Additionally, this month's session served to expose students to traditional art pieces, and contemporary art, so students can create modern art expression through poetry/spoken word, painting/drawing, and dance.
#UBHCOPArt Contest - Semi-Finalists
Students had the option to submit their artwork from the November Saturday Session to the #UBHCOPArt Contest, featured on our Instagram. The pieces featured here are the winners for each of their respective categories and the semi-finalists advanced on to compete for the grand prize!
