Developing Effective Bilingual Educators with Resources

Developing Effective Bilingual Educators with Resources (DEBER) Project is designed to facilitate the transfer from 2-year to 4-year institutions for Hispanic community college students pursuing an elementary, or secondary teaching credential in California with a bilingual teaching authorization.

Saúl I. Maldonado is the Co-Director of the Developing Effective Bilingual Educators with Resources Project at SDSU. Saúl Isaac is an Associate Professor in the Department of Dual Language and English Learner Education at San Diego State University. Maldonado investigates: (a) mathematics and science achievement in K-12 schools, (b) bilingual teacher education and (c) culturally responsive evaluation and assessment.

Sera Hernándezis the Co-Director of the Developing Effective Bilingual Educators with Resources Project and the grant's Director of Bilingual Teacher Preparation at San Diego State University. Sera Hernández, is the Department Chair and an Associate Professor of Dual Language and English Learner Education at San Diego State University. Hernández investigates: (a) language policy and practice, (b) bilingual teacher preparation, (c) bilingualism and biliteracy in the U.S. and internationally.

Cristina Alfaro is the Director of Institutional Partnerships for the DEBER Project at San Diego State University. Cristina Alfaro is the Associate Vice President of International Affairs at San Diego State University; Professor and immediate past Chair in the Department of Dual Language and English Learner Education; and Executive Director of the Center for Biliteracy Education Research. Alfaro investigates: (a) dual language teacher preparation, (b) international/transnational/binational education, (c) ideological consciousness development and (d) multilingual/global education leadership and evaluation.

Javier Diego Jacinto is the Community Outreach and Engagement Coordinator for the Developing Effective Bilingual Educators with Resources Project at San Diego State University. Additionally, he supervises the DEBER University  Seal Of Biliteracy and Cultural Competence (USBCC) and the DEBER Male Scholars Initiative. He completed an Associate of Arts in Elementary Teacher Education from Southwestern College, a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Arts and Sciences: Liberal Studies from San Diego State University, and a Masters of Arts in Postsecondary Educational Leadership & Student Affairs from the same institution.

Linda Sotelo is the Bilingual Administrative Support Coordinator for the Developing Effective Bilingual Educators with Resources Project at San Diego State University. Linda completed an Associate of Arts in Philosophy degree from Southwestern College, a Bachelor of Arts in Theological/Biblical Studies with concentration in Practical Theology from Baptist University of the Americas, and a Masters of Education in Higher Education with Counseling specialization from Houston Christian University (formerly Houston Baptist University) where she worked supporting administration with the launch and development of new doctoral programs

Mariano Lozano is a Graduate Research Assistant for the Developing Effective Bilingual Educators with Resources Project at San Diego State University.

Monique Escobedo is an educator and researcher. She teaches ELD at the high school level, and she also supports future educators through their field practicum experiences as well as through various undergraduate and graduate course topics. Monique's current research focuses on dual language learning strategies, student sense of belonging, and how various forms of capital influence access to education.

Michael Wickert is the Director of Teacher Education and the Developing Effective Bilingual Educators with Resources Project Director at Southwestern Community College District. Wickert is a professor in the English department at Southwestern Community College.

Adriana Garibay is a Transfer Counselor and Professor at Southwestern Community College. Garibay has over 20 years of experience working with underrepresented community college students. Garibay holds Bachelor's degrees in psychology and sociology and a Master's degree in Education (all from SDSU).

Fabiola Beas is the Counselor for the Developing Effective Bilingual Educators with Resources Project at San Diego Mesa College. Faby is a proud Mesa College alumna. She transferred from Mesa to SDSU  and earned an ADT in Psychology and a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology with a minor in Counseling and Social Change. She then earned a Master’s of Science in Counseling with a specialization in School Counseling and the California Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) credential.

Alberto Heredia is the external evaluator for the Developing Effective Bilingual Educators with Resources Project partnership. Alberto is a Project Director at WestEd, a research, development, and service agency, and focuses on on research and evaluation, teachers and leaders, and talent development and diversity.

Laurie Lorence is the Director of Teacher Education at San Diego Mesa College and the Developing Effective Bilingual Educators with Resources Project Director for the San Diego Mesa and City Colleges. Laurie is also a professor in Teacher Education and English at San Diego Mesa College. Laurie Lorence is a founding leader in DEBER and contributed to designing and implementing DEBER.
